GCS Breaks Ground at Southwest High - July 16, 2010

GCS held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to celebrate the start of an addition and renovation project at Southwest High.

Part of the 2008 school bonds, the project includes a new classroom addition for 560 students, a new media center and a new gymnasium. The project also includes improvements to Southwest’s athletic fields that started in September 2009. A new practice football field and a softball field with dugouts were completed this summer. The total budget for the projects at Southwest is about $31 million.

During the groundbreaking, speakers included Principal Alan Parker, Guilford County Board of Education Vice Chairman Amos Quick and Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green. Jim Coggins, head wrestling coach at Southwest, shared the history of the school.

The current facilities at Southwest were built in 1979 and updated in 1998 and 2007. The school was one of the district’s 16 most improved schools for 2008-09. It gained 7.8 percentage points on End-of-Course testing in 2009-10.
