Guilford County Commissioners voted against approving the purchase price of $907,000 to Guilford County Schools (GCS) to purchase of land for the southeast area elementary school, a project of the 2008 school bonds. GCS looked at approximately 65 sites for the school before deciding to move forward with the property located at 1516 Stewart Mill Road in the Terrapin Ridge subdivision. With $1.2 million budgeted for the land purchase, the 45-acre property came in almost $300,000 under budget and almost $600,000 under the appraisal price of $1.5 million.
GCS will work with the Board of Education to determine next steps for the new elementary school, which will serve 700 students.
“It is our commitment to our Guilford County community to build great schools,” said Superintendent Maurice Green. “We’ve got great momentum with the opening of two schools this fall and several more being renovated, and we look forward to building the southeast area elementary school.”
