Safe and Drug Free Schools

Guilford County Schools Safe and the Drug Free Schools Program provide comprehensive age-appropriate drug and violence prevention programs for all students (k-12) consistent with state and federal laws. GCS staff works closely with various community agencies to provide prevention, intervention and referral services to individuals as well as to groups of students and their families. The school system receives support and assistance from the Guilford County Sheriffs, High Point City Police, Greensboro Police, and Gibsonville Police departments to provide the DARE program to all 5th grade classes.

Consultation with Student Staff Support Teams is provided to teams to teach staff in how to effectively confront a student who is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol/drugs and make appropriate referrals. School staff receives training and curriculum in classroom management in programs such as Working Toward Peace, Skills for Growing and Skills for Adolescence. Parents are invited to attend Parent to Parent training to learn how to help their child cope with various situations.

Alternatives to suspension programs are made available to all middle and high schools for students who have violated the alcohol/drug and tobacco policies. Audio/video materials and staff training are available for schools requesting or needing additional services. This program assists schools with collaborative initiatives to provide programs such as the NET, START and LifeSkills in which schools were self selected to participate. The Substance Abuse Team is available to provide specific curricula, intervention strategies and referral procedures as needed.
